Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ufak tefek sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bandajlanmasıyla oluşan kısaca polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit lafıntısı ile ötekisi arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok adetda polipeptit ast birimi barındırır). Yapı taşı başkalık peptitlerin kısaca, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, gayrı amino asite kalıcı, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bandajlanır. Polipeptid konstrüksiyonsına tıkızlan amino asitlerin her biri konstrüksiyonya peptid bandajlarıyla bandajlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilinen en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine tıkızlan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, azade amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin gayrı ucundaki azade α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
